[I AM] A MAGICIAN lll Nikon D7000 Video Test
So finally school ended, and I'm back, with something BIG! This is a video I made with a photographer friend using a Nikon D7000. If you like it, we may make some more collaborations in the future.

Some great filming! Looks like a cool camera for sure :) Not so keen on the amount of flourishing and would have preferred more magic, considering the title; but I am a little biased since I don't see much value in doing a lot of flourishes. The type of crowd I perform to is not that interested in how awesomely I can cut cards, etc.. They want to see my magic and I find the impact is more pure if I don't mix in lots of flourishes; but that's just my audience. Still I was very impressed by the quality and technique. You've clearly been practising plenty and it is paying off!
Much respect for a great project. One minor niggle: I would lose the gloves. I was almost expecting to see some flourishes from the seat of a speeding motorcycle or perhaps some break-dancing, but used just for card-work the gloves looked quite out of place to me. |
I'm pretty sure I told you to put "a cardist". :(
Great vid though! Super high quality, even though I have to admit I don't like Nikon all that much. As for the gloves, like I told you on MSN, keep em! Seems like a cool image to me and there is no better way to handle Bicycles than with biker gloves. Makes perfect sense, regardless of you putting them on merely to cover up scratches. :D |
Thanks guys!:D
Mark, I'm NOT a cardist:cry: The reason we put a lot more flourishing than magic in the vid is because quality and editing were on the first place. I think you all agree that flourishes are much more spectacular for the eye than magic routines (Although I did some visual quick magic sleights). And yeah, I got a lot of positive feedback for the biker-gloves, so I guess you will see them more (Sorry Fin:D). |
High quality vid, nice flourishes and gloves, but my favourite part of all...fan from tree trunk!! Bizarre Lol :surprised:

At first, I was like, "Damn, nice camera." Than, I was like, "Gloves?!" I've tried and was not so successful or comfortable wearing gloves while working with cards. But I think it's tight cuz you don't see alot of card handlers wearing anything but maybe rings. Anyways, nice video man.

No worries dude, I can live with the gloves. It wasn't a major problem but they just felt a little out of place for me, still no big deal ;)

Of course, much of this comes down to taste, and if you love flourishing more than magic that is entirely awesome and will no doubt help you to become a wonderfully talented flourisher. I'm only speaking from my perspective, and my audiences see flourishes as a display of skill that can be accomplished with practise. Spectacular? No. Impressive? Of course. But when I do a good piece of magic, where cards change in their hands, or appear in my wallet, or I read their minds after they have merely peeked at a card; that, to them is much closer to "spectacular". The fact that it is meant to be impossible makes them much more impressed at the fact that I achieved it. Flourishes do not get the same reactions for good reason.. They are entirely possible! And as a side note, when flourishes are added to a magic routine, the spectators often think that THAT was the time something fishy was being done, some secret manipulation etc. The general public do appreciate flourishing and like to watch it, and some of it IS very impressive, don't get me wrong. I have nothing against it and I find much of it very pretty and also admirable from a skill point of view, but if asked to pick between the two and to watch magic or flourishing for 12 hours straight, I know my spec's would choose magic over flourishing any day of the week, simply because of the variety and the fact that they would actually be involved in the process. They would have something to take home afterwards apart from the thought of how cool I looked while juggling my deck in various ways ;) Good magic can give the spectator a truly spectacular experience and something solid to remember that THEY took part in. Flourishing alone does not offer them such a rich experience, not by any stretch of the imagination. |
Sorry Fin, I think I wasn't clear enough.
I don't say that flourishing is more spectacular than magic in a performance. Of course magic gives a much better expecience to the spectators. I just said that if you need to do a visual, eye-popping video, flourishing is better for a flashy edited vid than a magic routine. But yeah, I'm personally not really good in flourishing, I prefer magic too. |
I see what you mean. Flourishing is definitely a cool attention grabber, specially in a music-video style, because of the dynamic movement etc. I thought the camera-work was particularly well done and really helped with the overall feel.
